Call for abstracts and nominations

PhD students are invited to submit work to present at the 2026 PhD Conference. Submissions for lightning talks and posters are open to PhD students in any year of study, from any Scottish institution. The Conference is a great opportunity for students to gain experience and feedback on your work in a welcoming and supportive environment and, for many students, it’s the first opportunity they have to present.

If you do not wish to present work at the Conference, we encourage students to participate in the Reverse Viva session, where students examine an academic colleague on one chapter of their PhD thesis in a friendly mock-viva.

In addition to the Call for Papers and Posters, we invite colleagues to submit nominations for the Best Dissertation Award and students to submit nominations for the Supervisor of the Year Award. Poster submissions will all be considered for recognition and prizes at the Conference Dinner.

Deadline 14 June 2026

Lightning talks

PhD students and ECRs from SICSA institutions are invited to submit abstracts for lighting talks. Organisers will add talks to relevant conference sessions grouped by topic and research theme.

Poster session

The PhD Poster Session celebrates the diverse and dynamic research endeavours pursued by postgraduate students in computing throughout Scotland. Postgraduate researchers from all academic years and fields are encouraged to present a poster showcasing an aspect of their work. These posters should provide a succinct overview of the research, captivate viewers visually, and remain accessible to a broad audience of computing-related academics.

The competition not only fosters the growth of Scotland’s computing research community but also offers insight into the extensive array of postgraduate research projects underway.

All submitted posters will be displayed at the SICSA PhD Conference 2026 and evaluated by a panel comprised of members from Scotland’s university research community. Outstanding posters will be recognized with prizes and certificates.

Reverse Viva

Enjoyed by both students and academic colleagues, this session provides a unique opportunity to observe and participate in a mock-viva, exposing students the types of questions and answers they will encounter in their own vivas and providing insight into the preparation involved for examiners.

Supervisor of the Year

Scottish institutions deliver world-class researcher training and the SICSA Supervisor of the Year award recognises the outstanding guidance, mentorship and advising that underpins not only the success of individual PhD students but the health and advancement of our discipline as whole.

PhD students from any Scottish university who have completed the first year of their studies (or part-time equivalent) are invited to nominate their supervisor for recognition of exceptional supervision.
